I’ve always been curious about a lot of things. I read a lot of books and magazines. I ask questions. I like to find out information so I’m not blind to certain things.
When I decided to go back to college I was working at a place where it seems like it would be a good place to retire from. Well the workplace changed along with the economy. So I went back to college at a time when I could appreciate it more. So after about 2 years I graduated with a college degree. I know what I wanted to do I just had to find a way to accomplish it.
After reading books and literature on entrepreneurship, I knew that I wanted to have my own business. I purchased a franchise and it has taught me a lot. In some ways it almost feels like I still work for “the man” but now I can select what time of day I do that. Clothes 4 Cures is not a franchise and I have built this brand from the ground up. Chasing this dream made me different from some of the people who I worked with and hung out with.
Building Clothes 4 Cures makes me feel like I am doing good and making some type of contribution to the world. Sometimes when I look at the logo, or the pictures from the photo shoot, or the good comments from well wishers, I smile. I smile because I did it all on my own. Of course there was Dino, the photographer, that took great pictures. Rick, the SCORE rep, that told me “you can do this.” Justin, one of my best friends, that showed up after a great concert on a Saturday morning to brave the cold to give me his support and pose for pictures. And my kids, that think my t-shirt designs “are cool.

I have some great people as part of my team. Even the ones that I did not mention (i.e., my Facebook friends, Shequita, and others.) They have helped me to make some decisions that I will look back on and remember. I always felt different working at one of the largest retail chains. I thought differently. I acted differently. I even dated differently. I knew that I wanted to know more about what life could offer me.
Being different from the norm can have its good times and bad. I’m just glad that I have taken a course that is off the beaten path to create one of my own. 😀
